Category screen

Category

Create or edit a category. Categories are the backbone of the budget and the reports — every transaction has one.

Name

Required. The label shown everywhere this category is referenced.

Parent

Optional. Set a non-empty parent name to make this a subcategory. Subcategories roll up into their parent in budget and report totals.

Is expense

The sign convention:

  • Off = income (credits expected — salary, interest, refunds).
  • On = expense (debits expected — groceries, rent, subscriptions).

A category's sign convention cannot be changed once it has transactions; create a new category and merge the old one in.

Notes

Free-text memo, up to 255 characters.

Defaults

Switch Use defaults on to set this category's account behaviour.

  • Default account 1 — the account a new transaction posts to by

default when you pick this category.

  • Default account 2, Split with a second account, and the

split % — used by the budget & net-worth forecast to divide this category's surplus across two accounts (the split % to account 1, the rest to account 2). They shape projections only — the transactions you actually enter are never split.

Role flags

A handful of role flags reserve this category as the default landing spot for special transactions:

  • Service charge — bank fees auto-booked by reconciliation.
  • Interest earned — interest credits from a savings account.
  • Interest paid — interest debits on a loan or card.
  • Balance adjustment — the + Adjust button on the reconcile

banner posts here.

Each role can be held by at most one category at a time. Setting a role flag here clears it from any other category that previously held it.
